Music instruction typically used to be taught at all public schools but because of lack of funding and budget cuts, many school districts have had to eliminate musical instrument education from its curriculum.  That leaves it up to the parents to introduce their children to music lessons in all types of music such as kids guitar.  Research has shown that there are many benefits for children who learn how to read music and who learn how to play an instrument whether it is a piano, a recorder, a violin or guitar for kids.  This article will discuss the various benefits that go hand in hand with teaching your children music lessons.

There have been many studies conducted by researchers and scientists on the many ways music can help children socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively.  When most babies are born, a mother’s instinct is to rock them and sing or coo to them in a musical manner.  This helps them to be calm and to feel nurtured which starts the brains development emotionally and socially.  Many have called music the universal language because people of all different cultures and parts of the world use it as a way to connect to one another.  Music directly affects the brains connections to growth and learning and that is why so many babies respond to songs and music right from the beginning.

Music affects how you feel and can often change your mood depending on the type of music you hear.  For example, if you are sitting down and hear very slow, calm classical music, it could make you feel more relaxed to the point where you may drift off to sleep.  On the other end, if faster paced music is heard it may make you feel like getting up and moving your body and dancing.  This is where the physical benefit of music comes in because it can encourage the brain to want to make the body move.

Music affects all people no matter what age in positive ways but those that learn how to make their own music have even greater benefits.  It has been researched that children who learn how to read music and play an instrument tend to have higher IQ’s and do better in math as well as reading skills.  Learning how to read music helps the brain’s cognitive processing as a way of learning another language.  Because of this it helps a child to read better.  Putting together the music in order to make the instrument work correctly are the things that help to improve mathematical abilities.

It has also been shown that learning music for children can help those that have learning disabilities such as dyslexia or that are autistic.  Because music works so closely with reading skills, understanding music helps those that struggle with reading.  And for autistic kids, the social and emotional skills that are gained from musical interaction have proven to help these kids improve with the things that are normally hard for them like interacting with other people.

Through my experience of teaching piano to both young and adult students, I have encountered many issues that students face in their musical journey. One of the most universal problems that students face is that of self-discipline and perseverance despite the challenge that piano presents. I have found that the difference between the students that continue with their musical studies to achieve their desired goals and the students that soon quit in frustration is a matter of visualization and mental preparation for the study of piano. Therefore, I would recommend that ANYONE (parent or adult student) who is considering piano lessons do the following before they jump into a situation of frustration…

1. Sit down & think about your musical goals.

Students and parents of students often act impulsively when starting piano lessons (or any other instrument). The future student shows an interest in learning to play and without a second thought, the student is "suffering" through weekly lessons and daily practice. The piano changes from a fun goal to a chore, just another "should do" on the daily to-do list.

I recommend that before you even contact a piano teacher, sit down by yourself (if you are an adult student) or with your family (if you are a parent) and think about the following questions. Considering that the average monthly commitment to piano lessons costs ~$200 and above, 10 minutes spent thinking about the commitment is well worth it. It is better that you write down your answers to the following questions:

-Why do you want to study piano now? What makes this time different from the past or the future?

-What specific goals do you want to meet? Do you want to become a professional pianist? A piano teacher? Do you want to be able to read music and gain musical independence? Do you just want to learn to play your favorite songs? Do you want to compose your own music?

-What inspired you to really want piano lessons now? Did you hear a song you absolutely loved and want to play? Do you admire someone who plays piano? Do you want bragging rights? Do you want to exercise your mental or physical abilities? Do you just want to explore it for fun or to compose your own music?

-How quickly do you want/need to achieve the goals you have in mind? Do you have short or long-term goals? Or both? Do you want to take piano lessons for a few months or a few years?

-How do you intend to work toward those goals? How much time per day or per week do you have time to practice? Do you have a convenient place to practice? Are you willing to take time to read supplementary materials to enhance your overall knowledge or do you consider that a waste of time? How much work or school work do you have and will it interfere with a regular practice schedule?

-How much money do you have to dedicate on average every month to piano lessons? Do you have money saved up and set aside specifically for lessons and materials?

2. Once you have answered the above questions, make appointments with a few teachers and discuss these questions with them.

Ask the teachers for their expectations before you sign up for lessons. Differences in expectations often cause frustrations for both students and teachers because of a lack of common goals. Ask the potential teachers the following questions:

-What is your hourly rate? Do you require monthly commitments or can I pay weekly? Do you have discounts for more lessons per week?

-Do you provide the materials or do I have to purchase my own? Which books or materials do you require?

-Talk about short & long term goals with the teacher. Ask their opinion on how long it would take you to reach your goals and whether they are reasonable. Teachers often have a better idea of the time and work required to reach different goals.

-Ask for a syllabus or a general plan of action that the teacher would follow to reach YOUR goals.

-Ask about the teacher’s goals for you, they may be different or similar…

3. After talking with the teacher, take a week to really think about whether a commitment is right for you at this time.

Often, students commit to lessons without mentally preparing for the time and work it will require. Thus when difficulties are faced, frustration sets in and kills the fun experience that piano should be. And unfortunately, this may lead the student to quit and forevermore doubt his or her abilities to learn to play piano or other instruments. Thus, a perfectly talented individual may miss out on a lifetime of joy that comes with playing an instrument.

4. Once you have decided to commit, write a contract for yourself that details the steps you will take toward your goals and how you will stick to them.

It is often helpful for the whole family to sign such a "contract" so that each individual takes the student’s quest seriously. For example, the contract can stipulate when and where practice sessions will be, rewards for following through and focusing on practice, and agreements that other family members will not interrupt the student during practice sessions. Parents and students can also think of ways to encourage regular practice that will not result in nagging. By creating a contract for themselves, students feel more responsible for their own piano studies and require less pushing.

5. Visualize your goals and eliminate negative thoughts and words during your learning process.

It is VERY important to return to the goals you wrote down and visualize yourself reaching them. If you have the song that inspired you, listen to it at least once a week to remind yourself why you are working so hard. Feel the emotions that originally made you commit to lessons. It helps to speak to role models who you admire for their musical abilities and visualize yourself becoming a role model for another young student. If you remind yourself of the excitement that inspired you to take piano lessons, you will continue to find them fun and rewarding despite any challenges you face. Do not let any negative thoughts come into your head when you face a difficult task at the piano. Always think, "This is challenging, but look how far I have come already. That means that I can do this if I keep at it." There is nothing like a little self-love and appreciation to get you to your musical goals.

Did you ever notice how most people who start off at a young age taking piano lessons rarely continue past high school? Then, when these people grow into adults many of them will eventually regret their decision to quit. So much so that, many will actually seek out a new piano teacher and start all over again.

Why do most people quit? I don’t think it’s because they’re not motivated or they don’t like music. I believe it’s because they don’t realize why they’re taking piano lessons in the first place. Sure they can tell you that music is important and they probably should be trying harder but the fact is most simply cannot tell you the real reason for learning in the first place.

Do you want to know why? Ok, here it is. I truly believe that music is engrained into our subconscious and most of us truly want a way to express ourselves in ways that words cannot. Not only has music been around since the dawn of time, way longer than most modern forms of entertainment but, music is an integral part of our humanity.

Music resides deep within us and when we hear it, sing it, play it, share it, learn it, teach it or even dance to it, we get a little closer to who we truly are; multi-dimensional beings who are ultimately creative.

So why do we quit? Because we get discouraged when we cannot express ourselves through music the way we want to. Usually this happens because we compare our abilities to others and the distance between the way we play music now and where we want to get seems insurmountable. But, here’s the good news. Nothing can get in your way of learning if you just realize that know matter how you play you cannot be bad. Expressing yourself in any way with music is a good thing and can never ever be bad.

Now, I’m not going to go as far as saying that most piano teachers cause their students to quit because that would mean that it’s intentional. Nothing could be further from the truth. However, I do believe that many teachers lack the necessary skills to teach their students how to play from within. What does that mean? It means that teachers know how to teach notes, scales, rhythm, harmony and how to play a piece of music. What most of them fail to realize is that there is much more to teaching music than just what the mind can absorb.

If teachers knew how to tap into the souls of their students by providing the right motivational, emotional and spiritual information then, it would be easier for their students to overcome all the obstacles of learning to play. In fact, no obstacle is too big to overcome on the way to learning to be a great artist or musician. The drive is within all of us, it just needs to be recognized.

So, how can teachers learn the necessary skills? By learning how to tap into their own creative energy. You see it’s all about energy. It would be impossible for a teacher to share information about energy if the teacher lacks the creative energy themselves. Creative energy comes from within. In my experience, many teachers have never learned how therefore can’t possibly teach it.

Learning to tap into creative energy is a process which can be learned. It’s never too late. The first step to learning is realizing that you are not already connected to this energy. Then, once you realize that you’re not connected you begin to search for ways to get connected. How? By focusing on the reasons you play music. For example; you do not play music to impress rather you play music to inspire.

Music causes emotional changes within us that are positive. Most music anyway. Of course you have to be wary of low energy music that disguises itself as high energy music such as heavy pounding rock with repetitive angry lyrics. But, piano does not fall into this category. Piano music is the perfect outlet to express innate creative energy. If more teachers are to see the results they desire then more teachers will have to tap into their own creative energy.

If you’ve ever tried to learn the piano from a beginner’s book you will have discovered two things at least. Two things that make learning piano much harder than it need be.

Most piano beginner books are aimed at children. There seems to be a belief in the piano lesson publishing industry that it’s only children that learn the piano from scratch. This is plainly not the case as there are thousands and thousands of people who have always dreamed of playing piano but who never had the chance to learn when they were children. I know because I’m one of them. Years ago, when I was a kid, I didn’t know anyone who played the piano or who even had a piano in their front room. This was always the norm in middle-class Victorian families but not, alas, among the working classes. So very few of us had the opportunity of learning the piano at that time. Nowadays, children do have that opportunity and so today, if you pick up any of the majority of beginner piano books, you’ll find that it’s littered with little elves and pixies, the tunes will be mindlessly dull and the net effect will be to turn you away from what you’re trying to achieve. That’s not to say that there aren’t any beginner piano books targeted at adults, but they are not easy to find. And they still suffer from one major problem. Which brings me to my next point:

Piano lessons from books are intrinsically flawed. Here’s a little experiment: Try writing down on a piece of paper the sound that a bluebird makes, so that someone who’s never heard a bluebird can make the sound back to you. Of course, it can’t be done. No amount of words (supplied in a visual medium) can ever translate into an auditory one. It’s the same as trying to tell a blind man what the color blue looks like. It’s not possible. So what’s the answer? Well, for many years there was no answer and poor unfortunate teach-yourself piano beginners were stuck with these books which could never effectively teach them what they needed to know. But now, it’s time to rejoice! Easy piano lessons for beginners do exist at last! The new generation of piano lesson software contains not only the words and the notes written on the staves that you expect to see but also, and this is the killer difference, they contain audio clips of the pieces of music that you’re supposed to be learning. It makes a world of difference because at last you can see the notes on the page and hear both the rhythm and the melody which makes it so much easier to emulate the piece for yourself. It makes it so much easier and much, much faster to learn piano than ever before.

So it’s true, easy piano lessons for beginners do exist. It’s simply a matter of downloading the best package for you and get playing at last!

It’s important to realize that not all musicians are able to teach their art and not all music teachers are good at it . . . don’t waste your money on mediocre ones. Instead, do your research and make sure that the person you choose to teach your children piano is someone truly qualified to do so.

Family

Readiness. Is your child ready to learn? Even the best piano teacher will have troubles teaching a child who is adamantly opposed to learning piano. Younger children will probably be more interested in learning, while older ones might rebel at anything that seems like work. Gauge the interest in piano carefully before you begin.

Practice. Do you have what it takes to ensure your child practices daily? Experience. While experience and certificates are certainly not the only signs of a good teacher, they can definitely help. Someone who has been teaching for 30 years will have a few more tricks up their sleeve than someone who has just started a few weeks ago.

Likeability. Children have very keen people skills and tend to pick up on things that we don’t even notice. If your little pupil is not interested in continuing with this particular piano teacher, you might want to look elsewhere. It’s easiest for a kid (or anyone for that matter!) to learn from someone they trust.

Piano lessons can help shape a child’s life, so you’ll want to make sure you do a good job of choosing the right teacher. Proper piano instruction is an element extremely vital to learning the instrument well. Though it’s very possible to be a self-taught piano player, piano lessons can really increase the speed and efficiency with which one learns the instrument. That’s not to say that great piano instruction makes great piano players overnight; even the most naturally talented pianists still play for years before they consider themselves advanced. But proper piano lesson instructions will maximize those years to the fullest and ensure that the student is learning the correct techniques.

Though teaching styles always vary from instructor to instructor, piano instruction generally covers the same basic areas: fingering, , music reading, scales, technique, and sight reading. To be tied to the written music is a shame, when learning chords and music theory adds so much to the value of piano instruction.

Given a healthy dose of music theory and chord instruction mixed in, all of the other elements of piano instruction eventually begin to work hand in hand. Piano instruction then becomes an intricate web of gaining bits of detailed knowledge little by little and understanding the music that’s being played without fully realizing that it’s being gained.

Then playing the piano becomes more fun and a joyful event that can be shared with full understanding of the music theory and form and chord structure that lies behind each song.
