If you are considering purchasing one of the standard, conventional piano methods for your child and want a basis for comparison, here are some facts and interesting points that may help you make a choice.

THE BASTIEN METHOD Of the conventional piano methods, this is my favorite. Published by kjos.com, they are the standard these days that most teachers use.

The virtue of the Bastien Series books are several.

The type is large, like a BIG NOTE book, so kids aren’t squinting, looking for tiny little musical symbols to decipher. In fact many of the usual symbols are omitted in the interest of clarity.

There are finely done color pictures, which children find interesting and comforting, and can lead to a relaxing bit of conversation between teacher and student.

The sequence of exercises is in precisely correct order in terms of piano pedagogy: each concept builds easily on the last, from piece to piece. That is why, in fact, piano teachers love these books, because they can go from page to page without much effort. But that is bad for the children, that rote approach, and these colorful books are useful for much more than that.

THE JOHN THOMPSON METHOD This is an older piano method that perhaps your parents or grandparents used, but it is still popular today, exactly for that reason. Similarly, methods such as Schaum use much the same old-fashioned approach. I’ll bet you that you have a copy of one of these piano methods in your piano bench!

Thompson is a little boring in the early books in the series, with frankly uninteresting pieces illustrating the basics of piano. But where they shine is in subsequent volumes, wherein most of the great piano teaching pieces (Fur Elise by Beethoven, for example) are laid out in order of increasing difficulty. These pieces can be useful for older children who are refining the basics but are not yet playing easier masterpieces.

Tried and true, but a little boring and the type seems very small to most kids.

OTHER METHODS There were dozens of older methods from the heyday of the piano, ending around the 1960’s. Alfred, Schaum, Mel Bay, Faber all still exist today.

The main factor to remember is this: all these conventional methods follow the same curriculum with minor variations. All conventional piano methods start out the same, learning the first five white keys in the middle of the piano. It’s like teaching the alphabet to your child: you start with A and proceed upward. It’s the same with piano, and in all conventional piano methods the methodology is the same: learn the first five white keys.

Many songs can, of course, be played using only these five white keys. For example, Jingle Bells, or Mary Had A Little Lamb, Alouette and a thousand other familiar songs.

Learning strategies are important for piano students. Having developed great learning strategies over years of teaching experience is what makes good teachers. Young piano students, however, need a bit of guidance to practice their music at home using effective strategies to develop good playing habits. Without this they may not acquire the basic knowledge and skills necessary to move forward. Plus, there is no point in having your child spend 30 minutes practicing incorrectly without learning their pieces when the material can be mastered in 10 minutes with good practice habits.

Imagine little Susie or Johnny at the piano delighted to be learning to play, but having so much trouble mastering their first lessons at home. They’re not getting the guidance they need because their parents who may not play the piano assume they can’t help and that the weekly piano lesson is all the guidance their young student needs. These assumptions are not true. It’s easy to help your young student at home even if you don’t play the piano. Here are 5 tips for parents to help their young children use effective learning strategies at home and develop good paying habits.

Remind your child practicing piano at home to:

1. Sing the note names as they are played. Pre-reading music has the names of the notes written on the note heads. Students need to say the names of then notes as they are played so they learn to visualize what keys are under their fingers in beginning hand positions C and Middle C. Without this simple knowledge, students will not b able to go on to learning to read notes on the staff.

2. Keep eyes on the music, not the hands. Once students have their hand position, they need to keep their eyes on the music and not look down at their hands. This way they are developing a keyboard in their imaginations. This is also necessary for reading notes on the staff, which is just a map of the piano keyboard.

3. Sit back on the piano bench and reach out to the piano. Students will not be able to use their small muscles in the fingers unless they are reaching out to the piano with their arms extended and elbows slightly bent with elbows pointing to the walls and not the floor.

4. Round the hands over the keyboard. The fingers need to stretch down to the piano keys from the top knuckle and then retract back to a rounded hand position. This allows for finger flexibility and control.

5. Play each song 5 to 7 times a day. It doesn’t take long for a young student to practice their beginning lessons. But each song needs to be played about 7 times using good playing strategies. For the average student whose teacher has assigned them two songs, this will take about 5 minutes a song. That’s a ten minute practice session. And that’s really all beginning students need to do to learn their lessons. But without these strategies they could sit at the piano for hours and never learn what they need to know.

There are many factors you should consider as you design a musical education for your children or yourself.

The major question to answer is the location of the lesson. Will your kids be taught at home by a traveling instructor or will you travel to the piano teacher’s studio?

LESSONS AT HOME

If you want to find a traveling instructor in your local area, try the local paper or local print media ads. Many piano teachers advertise in newspapers as well as online. Most piano teachers do not travel because of the major added expenditure on transport.

It is more convenient for the piano teacher to teach at their studio, but it is more convenient for the piano student to be taught at home. In the end, the decision may be left up to which types of teachers are available in your area. If you are in a very remote area, your only choice may be to purchase a piano method via mail and the internet.

There are many benefits to hiring a traveling instructor and having your lessons at home. First of, having lessons at home is far more convenient, as well as being conducive to learning because the child is in a comfortable, familiar environment.

Next, you will be able to see the lesson and observe how the teacher teaches and how your child will react. You can bet that the teacher is eager to do a good job because you are present, if not in the same room, at least in the house and able to monitor your child’s experience from afar.

Kids feel more comfortable at the home piano, and can glide from their own activities to the lesson and back again, all in the comfort of home.

Piano teachers who come to your home are more expensive, necessarily, but in my opinion, assuming you have a good teacher, you get what you pay for. That is, home lessons are a better buy because the learning environment is better and more secure. You may also want to make the point that many families want to have their children playing music in the home as a cultural value they support.

Having the lessons at home set that example for the children, but perhaps even more valuable is the fact that you may show praise for their efforts, however humble, more easily in your home.

LESSONS AT THE TEACHER’S STUDIO

Perhaps the prime virtue is that they are cheaper, and since most piano instructors teach only out of their home, there is a greater selection.

Some teach in their own home, or a studio attached to it. Others teach at music schools, exalted and famous, or in a storefront type of operation. In any case, you’ll need to travel to the piano lesson and then either sit in on the lesson, or spend a half hour or so doing something else. And if you have other children to attend to, this can become difficult to organize and pull off happily.

One virtue of the studio teacher is that they usually have a larger library of music than a traveling piano teacher would ordinarily carry with them. This probably would not make a difference to the average child starting out, as they would usually have a single text assigned to them at first. But for an adult or more accomplished child, it could be a benefit.

As a general rule, I would try not to sit in on the lesson at a teacher’s studio too often, as long as you feel comfortable with the teacher and child. The reason for this is simply concentration: your child will concentrate better if they are not trying to please you at the same time as following the piano instructor’s directions.

At home it is different. There you can hear the progress of the piano lesson all through your home, at your leisure.

But your choice of piano instruction may come down to what is available in your area.

In other cases, such as a rural location, you may not be able to find a teacher at all, or a teacher may prove too expensive.

In this case, I would suggest trying to find what I would call a "starter method," that is, a method that is organized simply enough that you can do it yourself at home. There are many available, from large manufacturers to individuals who market their products online.

I would suggest that you compare all the piano products, and ask for samples if necessary. Some piano methods allow you to try them out online, using a virtual piano that uses your computer’s mouse so you can get the idea of how that piano method works.

Regardless of which piano method you use, exploration of the piano whether in lessons or on your own can be a rewarding experience. Go very slowly and this is most important, learn at your own pace.

If you have been discouraged by the cost of a private piano instructor, it’s time to take a look at your alternatives. Professional instructors can be very effective, but it is possible to learn without them. Advancements in technology have proven that nothing is impossible. This is especially true of learning new things.

The most traditional method of learning to play the piano is, of course, a private instructor. piano instructors have been in existence since the invention of the piano. The biggest downfall of this method is the expense. Instructors usually charge per hour or per session, though some charge per week or month. If your instructor is a close friend or relative, you can probably work out a discount, or even learn for free. Unfortunately, most of us do not have this luxury, so we have to pay full price.

Since most people are busy throughout the day, this is an excellent option. You can learn at night, on weekends, or whenever you have time.

For an even less expensive alternative, you can use a piano guide book. This is a bit more difficult, because you will not have the benefit of video or animation. It is, however, your least expensive option. As a matter of fact, guide books can occasionally be found for less than $10.

One more option that you have to learn the piano is DVD piano lessons. All you need is a television and DVD player, and your piano or keyboard. Just play the DVD, and follow along with the instructor. As with the software, piano lessons on DVD can be taken at your own pace and convenience.

The alternative options available will save you money, and possibly time, when compared to private instruction. With any of these options, however, the most important factor is you. Make sure you have the right attitude to learn, the discipline to make it happen, and the patience to keep going when you get frustrated. If you can do this, you can learn piano, and save money doing it.

Starting piano lessons is a big step in a child’s life. Parents who value a musical education are usually eager to begin as soon as possible. After all, many of piano’s great prodigies began playing at age three. Still many piano instructors advise parents to hold off starting piano lessons until between ages six and eight. What age is actually best?

Parents should be thinking less about age when it comes to starting piano lessons and more about development. After all, children develop at individual rates. Some children reach particular growth milestones earlier. Others reach them much later. Parents should evaluate their children based on these milestones to determine readiness for piano lessons.

It’s true that a majority of children realize success in piano instruction when they begin lessons between ages six and eight. However, this is because most of the mental, motor and emotional skills necessary to learn the piano arrive during those years. But not always.

Here are five signs to look for when determining if your child is ready to start piano lessons:

1. Can your child hold a pencil or crayon properly? The motor skills needed for these tasks are largely the same ones needed to play the piano. A child who cannot properly hold a writing instrument will be overwhelmed trying to force unwieldy fingers into a "C" position. Ask a doctor, teacher or occupational therapist to evaluate your child’s pencil-holding skills if you’re unsure.

2. Can your child count to 10? Rhythm and timing is very important when learning piano. A child who cannot count to at least 10 may have trouble learning certain concepts about piano.

3. Can your child follow sets of instructions? A child who cannot follow a simple series of instructions is not ready for starting piano lessons. Test your child by giving a series of three commands. Then evaluate how well the child follows through. Here’s one example: Ask your child to go to his room, find a red sweatshirt in his drawer and put on the sweatshirt. Tell him to come back and see you when he’s finished. He may be ready for piano lessons if he reports back to you in a reasonable amount of time with the job done. Does he go upstairs and forget what you said? Does he only get half of the job done? Does he get extremely frustrated trying to complete the series of tasks? If so, he probably isn’t quite ready for piano lessons.

4. Can your child sit still and pay attention for at least 30 minutes? Piano students usually begin with 30-minute lessons. A child who fidgets or whose mind wanders before 30 minutes pass will not reap the maximum benefits of a piano lesson. He or she may become frustrated or may be very slow to learn. Piano lessons are costly, so there isn’t much point in spending the money without getting the full benefit of learning. At the very least, locate a teacher who gives shorter lessons for very young students.

5. Does your child express an interest in music? Children who love music will probably be very motivated to learn to play the piano. They will enjoy practicing and won’t complain (at least not often) about going to the lesson. A child who doesn’t show an aptitude toward music won’t have the motivation necessary to apply herself to learning the notes or concepts.

Very few children reach all these milestones at age three. Piano prodigies are considered so not because they began taking piano lessons at an early age. Instead, it’s likely because they developed early both physically and emotionally and were also musical geniuses. Most children fare best starting piano lessons when they are truly ready in all aspects of development.
